Auditions: Did you expect THIS?

How glamorous is my life right now? I'm sitting in Logan airport having conference calls with my interns. Of course, when this is your third trip to NYC in a week and a half, only one thing can come to mind: AUDITION SEASON!!!

I have my Fort Worth Opera mainstage audition tomorrow. I love Darren Woods and the crew at Fort Worth. They're down to earth and invested in the young singer.

Throughout these auditions, the one thing that I cannot stress enough is how you act outside the audition room. I am amazed and appalled at some of the behavior that I've witnessed thus far. I saw a gentleman snap at a moderator because the auditions were running 15 minutes behind schedule. When the same young man went in to sing, the moderator began writing in his notebook. I then said to him, "If only he knew who you work for." The moderator just gave me a wink and a smile.

THERE ARE EYES AND EARS EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!

At another audition (yes, I do more than one a day), I met a mezzo in her late twenties. We were having a lovely conversation about programs that we have previously done. We realized that we went to some of the same programs. Once she found out I had gone to one in particular, this woman started bashing the company and my friend who runs the company! I probed her a little to see if her grievances were just, but ended up disappointed. It just sounded like she was poorly prepared for the role she performed with them. I made sure that we exchanged cards, so I can report back to my friend.

Moral of the story: Your audition begins when you enter the building and ends when you exit the building. But all in all, nothing accounts for tasteless behavior!

Love ya!
